International Ph.D. in Chemistry Studies at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland
Graduates of Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science and related University Departments, holding a Master of Science or equivalent degree, are welcome to join a four year Ph.D. Program in Physical Chemistry. This Program is individually tailored for each student based upon Regulations of the International Ph.D. Studies. Applications of both experimentalists and theoreticians of outstanding aptitudes and strong motivation for research work are invited.

We propose fundamental research topics of Ph.D. studies in the following areas:
  • nanotechnology and new materials
  • photochemistry, photophysics and molecular spectroscopy
  • physical chemistry of surfaces and interfaces, of solids (reactions under high pressure, structural studies), of soft matter, and of supramolecular complexes
  • chemical kinetics and catalysis, thermodynamics
  • thermodynamics and statistical mechanics
  • quantum chemistry, mathematical phenomena modeling of phenomena, and molecular dynamics
  • electrochemistry, including electrode processes, electrochemical sensors, and protection against corrosion
  • astrochemistry
  • concrete propositions of Ph.D. studies

Program of the International Ph.D. Studies

We offer:

  • high quality research opportunities
  • active collaboration with our renowned partner research centres in Poland, in the states of European Union, United States and Japan
  • a few month research trainings of best our Ph.D. students in the collaborating centres
  • reasonably low undergraduate teaching duties
  • frequent and effective contacts with the research supervisors
  • direct access to top quality up-to-date scientific instrumentation and computational facilities in recently renovated and modernized research laboratories, including specialized laboratories
  • friendly, stimulating, teamwork-oriented research atmosphere
  • assistance to our best Ph.D. graduates in applying for domestic and foreign postdoctoral fellowships
  • employment opportunities at the Institute of Physical Chemistry for our best Ph.D. graduates after successful completion of their postdoctoral trainings

Individual Program of the International Ph.D. Studies

A tax-free monthly fellowship is awarded to successful applicants in the initial amount of at least 1450 zł, i.e., actually, ca. 350 EUR. Progressively, this amount is being increased in relation to advancement of the individual Ph.D. studies records and success in the research work. Out-of-Warsaw students may apply for accommodation in the Institute-owned student hostel.

How to apply: Terms and conditions of recruitment to the International Ph.D. Studies

Step 1. Select a topic of your Ph.D. research and your future Ph.D. supervisor from list of the institute employees and contact him or her.
Step 2. If initially accepted by your future supervisor, submit all the documents required. At least two weeks before the qualification exam, the documents should arrive at:

    Institute Office
Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences
    01-224 Warsaw, Kasprzaka 44/52
    Tel.: +(48 22) 343-3133
    Fax: +(48 22) 632-5276 or +(48 22) 343-3333
    E-mail: barbara@ichf.edu.pl, dand@ichf.edu.pl
Step 3. Successfully pass a written qualification exam covering fundamentals in chemistry and physics* and an English test in texts of general physical chemistry (see themes of the exams in the past). Only a "good" and "very good" score at the exam guarantees acceptance to the Ph.D. Program. The exam is held in Polish or English.

Good luck!

*A recommended textbook is Physical Chemistry, P. W. Atkins, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1998.
