Polish-German Workshop on Selective Transformations
of Carbohydrates and Other Natural Products,
and Selected Problems of NMR and CD Spectroscopy
"The Polish-German Workshop on Selective Transformations of Carbohydrates
and Other Natural Products, and Selected Problems of NMR and CD Spectroscopy"
was held at Stare Jablonki, May 30 - June 3 1998. The meeting
was supported by the Polish State Committee for Scientific Research,
Deutsche Forschungsgemein-schaft, Foundation of Polish-German Cooperation
and the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The workshop gathered five cooperating groups: three German teams
from the Universities of Tuebingen (headed by Prof. W. Voelter),
Hannover (headed by Prof. H. Duddeck), Kaiserslautern (headed by
Prof. H.-G. Kuball) and two Polish ones, from the Institute of Organic
Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, (headed by Prof. M. Chmielewski
and Prof. L. Stefaniak). Both cooperating sides have chosen and invited
some prominent scientists from their own countries. Altogether 21
participants from Germany and 23 from Poland took part in this event.
Two IOCh scientists, Prof. M. Chmielewski and Dr. J. Frelek and
Prof. W. Voelter from University of Tuebingen were chosen as organisers.
In addition to 14 plenary lectures, presented by Professors S. Berger,
H. Duddeck. H.-G. Kuball, H. Kunz, M. Regitz, R. Schmidt, W. Voelter
and E. Winterfeldt (all from Germany) and M. Chmielewski, J. Gawronski,
J. Jurczak, M. Makosza, W. Stec and L. Stefaniak from Poland, the
scientific program included 11 oral communications and 14 posters,
which were available for study and discussion throughout the meeting.
It should be noted that a large group of young scientists actively
participated in the Meeting. The highlights of the workshop program
included: synthesis and stereoselective transformations of carbohydrates,
nucleic acids and other natural products, aromatic nucleophilic substitution,
cyclobutadienes and phosphaalkynes, NMR and CD spectroscopy. The participants
enjoyed the heterogeneous scientific program of the event, which created
the opportunity to pick up some new ideas in modern organic chemistry
The beautiful countryside of Mazurian lakes, the tour along the picturesque
Ostróda-Elblag canal and the excursion to the Teutonic Knights'castle
in Malbork created a friendly atmosphere, which allowed to establish
new scientific contacts and intensified existing cooperation. On behalf
of all participants, the organisers would like to thank once more
the Polish State Committee for Scientific Research, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft,
Foundation of Polish-German Cooperation and the Institute of Organic
Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences for their kind financial
support. Owing to the enormous success of the meeting, all participants
agreed to continue with a second Polish-German workshop in the future,
and then Germany will be the host country.
For the organisers
The present issue of the "Polish Journal of Chemistry"
contains the papers based on the lectures and communications
delivered at the Workshop. According to general topics of
the meeting the presentations are divided into three sections:
- Synthetic organic chemistry.
- NMR spectroscopy.
- CD spectroscopy.
