| The research studies at the Department involves various areas and they are realized by the following research groups. |
1. Electrochemistry and Corrosion |
 |
- Kinetics and mechanism of corrosion of metals in aqueous environments:
- passivation and depassivation of metals,
- composition and structure of passive layers,
- localised corrosion (stress corrosion cracking, pitting, intergranular corrosion).
- Hydrogen in metals and alloys:
- entry of hydrogen into metals from electrolytes,
- transport (diffusion) of hydrogen,
- interaction of hydrogen with structural defects,
- effect of hydrogen on mechanical properties (hydrogen embrittlement).
- Modification of metal surface (plasma nitriding, PA CVD, conversion layers):
- corrosion behaviour,
- interaction with hydrogen.
- Studies and expertises for industry:
- analysis of corrosion and hydrogen failures,
- monitoring of corrosion,
- protection methods.
2. Applied Surface Science
- Theory of electron transport in solid for applications in electron spectroscopies.
- Elastic electron backscattering from surfaces of solids.
- Characterization of solid surfaces and surface processes.
- Qualitative and quantitative analysis of solid surfaces.
- Structure, composition and electron properties of the first atomic layers of solids.
- Application of the pattern recognition methods in electron spectroscopies.
3. Thermodynamics of phase equilibrium
- Description, correlation, critical evaluation, and prediction of vapour-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibrium and solubility data for technology and environmental protection.
- Methodology of correlation and critical evaluation of thermodynamics data for binary- and multi-component systems containing organic substances and water, and development of selected and recommended data bases.
- Methodology of prediction of phase equilibrium for systems as above and calculations of reference data.
- Updating of data bank of phase equilibrium and related thermodynamics properties.
