Work package description

Work package number and title: WP4.
2nd International Workshop on Surface Modification for Chemical and Biochemical Sensing, SMCBS'2005.
1st International Workshop on Surface Modification for Chemical and Biochemical Sensing, SMCBS'2003.
Type of activity: WS
Relative start month: 0
Timetable: 36 months,
two-week long workshops

Objectives:

To organise two international workshops in Poland. The main goal of the workshops is to advance understanding of fundamentals and applications of chemical modification of surfaces of solid substrates as well as technology of this modification for both improving old and introducing new routes in chemical and biochemical selective sensing. This objective will be achieved through lectures of recognised international experts in the field and communications of junior scientists as well as discussions. Expertise will be shared and ideas will be exchanged.

Description of the contents, the workplan, the steps, the approach or the methodology:

A week lasting workshop will be organised every two years in response to a rapid growth of interest in both fundamental knowledge and application of chemical modification of solid surfaces for the separation, selective sensing and biosensing purposes. Invited lectures and contributed communications as well as visits to laboratories of the Centre will focus on modification of various solid substrates, such as quartz or silica and other non-conducting solids for application in, e.g., separation sciences. Also, modification of metal electrodes, such as platinum, gold, titanium or carbon to result in chemically modified electrodes will be addressed. Formation of both monolayers, such as self-assembled monolayer films, and multilayer films, such as different polymer films, will be covered. Also, validation of composition, structure and selectivity properties of the modified surface via a range of spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and electrochemical techniques will be included.

Workshop organisational details are as follows:

  • approximately 60 to 80 participants, including:
    • about 15 to 20 invited lectures
    • about 40 to 60 oral and poster communications of junior scientists and graduate students
  • a large opportunity left for a round table discussion and informal meetings.
Timetable:
  1. Month 1 - Invitation of distinguished scientists and experts to join the International Advisory Board of the workshop
  2. Month 2 - Call for papers, selection of invited speakers, leaflet and www page of the workshop with necessary information.
  3. Month 4 - Completion of the scientific programme and registration materials.
  4. Month 6 - Workshop.
  5. Month 10 - Publishing workshop proceedings as a special issue of a professional journal.

Partners involved:
  1. Person responsible in the Centre: Prof. W. Kutner.
  2. International Advisory Board formed from the international experts in the field of chemical modification of solid surfaces.
  3. Organising Committee selected from the faculty members and junior scientists of the Centre.
  4. Invited speakers selected from leading experts of international community of chemical modification of solid surfaces.

Deliverables, expected results, milestone for the overall package:
D 4.1. Publishing the proceedings of the workshop in Bioelectrochemistry.
D 4.2. Broadening the scope of comprehension of the Centre employees and other interested researches from Poland on contemporary science and technology of chemical surface modification for selective sensing.
D 4.3. Increased dissemination of information via networking between the Centre and several foreign centres.
D 4.4. Preparing the Centre employees for joining other activities and initiatives of EU within the VI Frame Programme through selected key actions.
